Miriam Seger, MBCA's landscape gardening guru, is featured in an article in the Palm Springs Life magazine this month. Miriam's expertise and effective teaching style can be experienced in MBCA's series of instructional videos produced by Board member Stacy Doolittle and filmed by local videographer Cole Gibson. Segments focus on Deep Watering, Planting Hacks, and a Fall Planting Guide, each containing easy-to-follow demonstrations with detailed and entertaining advice. Miriam has also contributed a related series of easily readable content that enhances the videos, with Desert-Wise Planting and Desert-Wise Watering advice and photos.

On March 23 in a special extension to its March 10 regular meeting, the Twentynine Palms City Council rejected the E-Group Solar Project proposed for the Harmony Acres area of the City after hearing about 3 hours of public comments. Residents expressed concerns about dust, water usage, destruction of desert habitat, and health issues. MBCA formally commented in 2024 and several Board members including Twentynine Palms resident Pat Flanagan have continued to comment in writing and at meetings. The developer's contention that they could take their project to a state-level review via AB 205 was disputed, as the project doesn't appear to meet those criteria. Instead, residents encouraged the City Council to abide by its ban on utility-scale solar, instituted into its development code in 2012. Board member Janet Johnson commented after the decision, "This shows how having decision-makers living locally, and are accountable locally, and know first-hand that no one wants to live next to solar panels, makes a difference."

MBCA has published its latest YouTube video on desert-wise landscaping. "Getting to the Root of Fall Planting/Working with Nature" offers tips and suggestions on design by MBCA's gardening expert Miriam Seger, as well as steps to prepare in fall for a healthy and vibrant spring bloom. With a focus on the lack of environmental review as required by the California Environmental Quality Act, the Center for Biological Diversity and local group Indian Cove Neighbors filed a lawsuit against the City of Twentynine Palms for its approval of the OfLand resort development. The lawsuit maintains that a full environmental review is required rather than the weaker Mitigated Negative Declaration that was accepted by the City Council. California began to address the observed and predicted decline of the Western Joshua tree initially through passage of the Western Joshua Tree Conservation Act in 2023, as an alternative to granting threatened/endangered species status. To enforce the Act, the California Fish and Game Commission was tasked to develop a Conservation Plan. After two years of administrative planning and public input, the Commission approved the Western Joshua Tree Conservation Plan on August 13. Public input included not only pleas for stronger conservation but also opposition to regulations perceived to be too restrictive and expensive. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife has announced a revised version of the Western Joshua Tree Relocation Guidelines and Protocols. It has been developed to implement provision of the state's Western Joshua Tree Conservation Act and revised over the course of several years, with extensive and impassioned public comment at several Fish and Game Commission meetings. The Department reports that the August 2025 version of the guidelines includes these revisions:

• New determinations when relocation may be required
• Expanded minimization measures
• Addressing availability of relocation sites
• Minor clarifications and grammatical edits

 

San Bernardino County published a new short video highlighting the Desert View Conservation Area in Joshua Tree. The free access area offers 3 miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding on 605 acres of native plants and wildlife. 

A new study in the online journal Ecology Letters focuses on changes to Joshua tree viability and blooming since the early 20th century. The study uses data from citizen scientist reports of Joshua trees and their blooms through the iNaturalist app, plus historic data. While climate change seems to be increasing the frequency of Joshua Tree blooming, it is also negatively affecting the survival of Joshua tree seedlings. A Los Angeles Times article explains the study and includes comment from Kelly Herbinson, Mojave Desert Land Trust Executive Director.

As the California Legislative session draws to a close, MBCA has joined with 93 other organizations signing a letter opposing efforts to "gut and amend" legislation that would weaken environmental protections without public input.
