Biology 101: Leaf pores (stomata) open to inhale carbon dioxide and exhale oxygen (transpiration). The pores of desert plants are especially good at absorbing moisture from the air since every drop counts. As an infrequent treat, foliage water sprays help hydrate plants and wash off dust. This improves sunlight absorption and gas exchange. Leafy plants are best sprayed in the cool of morning when they start opening their pores, exchanging gases, and taking up water (photosynthesizing).
Yuccas, agaves, and cacti are on the opposite schedule. Their pores close during the day to keep moisture in, and open up for gas exchange at night (CAM photosynthesis). Yuccas benefit from an occasional night time spritz but avoid spraying agave because water collects at the base of the leaves near the ground, attracting pests and rot. Heavily watered agaves are susceptible to agave weevils.
When overhead watering plants (in the morning!), spray lightly then return to spray again in fifteen minutes. This gives the stomata time to open in response to “rain”. Never spray in strong sun when water droplets function like little magnifiers that burn foliage. Avoid spraying during heat waves because the combination of moisture and heat create perfect conditions for pathogens. Overhead watering of diseased plants can spread problems to other plants.
Simulate a rain event three times a year with repeated heavy sprays. Here’s a great blog on the topic.
GADGET ALERT! For foliage and seedlings, a good rain wand is a 30” Dramm One Touch with on/off and flow control. The “water breaker” head breaks up droplets and delivers a gentle spray that doesn’t damage tender growth. Rain wands are easier to manage when paired with a swivel adapter. Consider spending a little more on these types of items as the budget varieties tend to walk off the job sooner, or leak and send water dribbling down your sleeve.
