The 2019 Bobcat Hunting Moratorium and Management Plan (AB 1254) was initiated following the California Fish and Game Commission decision in 2015 to ban bobcat trapping in California, an action supported and celebrated by many here in the Morongo Basin. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife has now published a Draft Bobcat Conservation and Management Plan and is asking for comments on the Draft plan by November 1. The Draft plan states that the California bobcat population is healthy and proposes to lift the moratorium and use “tag fees” (allowing hunters to kill bobcats) to fund conservation. MBCA is grateful to local resident Miriam Seger for her letter published by the Desert Trumpet that points to many specific problems with the proposed plan to guide other commenters.
